Interesting facts about Elsfleth and the Wesermarsch
Land by the water
This is what the residents of the Wesermarsch affectionately call their region. It's no wonder, since their district is more abundant with water than almost any other in Germany. 95 kilometers of river dikes and 62 kilometers of sea dikes protect the low-lying marshland from flooding. Located between the North Sea coast, the Jade Bay, and the Weser River, this expansive landscape, characterized by fishing boats and the Wadden Sea in the north and moorland in the south, awaits your discovery.
Elsfleth
is one of the oldest towns on the Lower Weser. According to documents and chronicles, the name can be traced back to the year 1220. The date of its founding is unknown. However, that it is a very old settlement is evident from the fact that the first church is said to have been founded as early as 860 by Bishop Ansgarius of Bremen. During the Stedingen period (12th and 13th centuries), Elsfleth was the ecclesiastical center of Nordstedingen and a meeting place for disputes between the Rüstringen Frisians and the Bremen people. In 1350, Elsfleth came under the rule of the Counts of Oldenburg. In 1504, St. Nicolai Church was built, which acquired its current hook shape through an extension added in 1690.
Here are our tips for you:
Maritime Shore Excursion & Lower Weser Shipping Museum – Haus Elsfleth
Information panels provide information about the individual significant maritime sites, ships, and buildings. You can explore the maritime shore excursion on your own, following the directional arrows on the anchors embedded in the ground, or take a guided tour. The third building of the Lower Weser Maritime Museum is located in Elsfleth in the former "Villa Steenken" and provides information about the diverse maritime developments along Oldenburg's Lower Weser in the 20th century. Highlights of the museum include the diverse collection of boatbuilding tools and the ship simulator.
Excursions & Sights in the Wesermarsch
Lush green meadows, impressive farms, tranquil beaches, and stunning bike rides invite you to explore the Wesermarsch region on foot, by bike, by car, or by bus. The Hotel and Restaurant Kogge is the focal point for all guided tours in and around the Wesermarsch region.
Sailing training ship „Großherzogin Elisabeth“
For over 150 years, Elsfleth has been one of the most important training centers for seafarers in Germany. Young men and women are trained here, from ship mechanics to captains for long-distance voyages. The "Lissi," as she is affectionately called by the people of Elsfleth, is berthed here. The Grand Duchess Elisabeth Training Ship Association supports seafaring training.
On this proud three-masted gaff-rigged schooner, you can enjoy the joys of historic windjammer sailing without sacrificing the comforts of a comfortable interior. Sail with the "Lissi" and discover the world on a day trip or longer voyages on the Weser, North, and Baltic Seas.
The ship also offers a wonderful ambiance as a "wedding room." During her stays in the port of Elsfleth, from April to October, civil marriages are also performed on the "Großherzogin Elisabeth."
